Unfiltered #2 - SEARCHING FOR ART ? 3 GUIDELINES TO CONSIDER!

Are you in the market for artwork to adorn your home, office, or collection?

Does the world of art and its myriad offerings appear as a complex maze? In our previous article, we discussed the significance of prioritizing your emotions when buying art – selecting an artwork that deeply moves you and will endure as a cherished possession. However, there are several factors you must take into account.

So, before embarking on the quest for that perfect artwork, scouring galleries, exhibitions, art fairs, websites, or artists' studios, here are 3 tips to prepare yourself for this journey!"

#1 Define Your Budget

I can't stress this enough: the price of an artwork is not directly proportional to the emotional impact it will have on you, and vice versa. Its price tag doesn't define the emotional value you'll attribute to it. However, the price range may vary from a few hundred euros to figures with 7, 8, or even 9 digits.

This is why you must set a budget. How much are you willing to spend on an artwork you absolutely love ? Would you even consider paying in instalments, an option now often offered by galleries and online art sales platforms.

But always set a limit, even if you choose an artwork at a much lower price! However, depending on where you purchase the artwork, you must consider the possible shipping, customs, and framing fees. It is important to know what the total cost will be, and double-check with the vendor as to avoid any unexpected surprises.

Depending on your budget, this will also guide you in terms of which "vendor" you should consider... a gallery? An online platform? at an exhibition or art fair?

This topic will be adressed in a future article : "Where to Buy Art?"

#2 Prepare Your Artwork “Specifications"

I know that the term "specifications" may seem somewhat crude when it comes to art.  However, from my own experience, I've learned that we don't always consider all the details, and a little foresight can help prevent disappointments (such as realizing an artwork won't fit in the stairwell or between the two windows where you intended to display it).

Start by examining the potential spots for the artwork or, more broadly, the available spaces. Take measurements, and, even better, take pictures. The same applies if you're considering a sculpture. Also, always consider the weight of an artwork; it's a practical matter—some artworks are not suitable for plasterboard walls due to their weight!

And finally, determine what kind of art you like or want :

  • What medium: Painting? Photography? Sculpture?
  • What style: Figurative? Abstract? Pop Art? Classical?
  • What theme: Landscape? Portrait? Geometric? Street Art?

#3 Immerse Yourself in Art!

Here’s the most enjoyable part: immerse yourself in the world of art, bathe it in! Visit galleries, exhibitions, art fairs, trade shows—or even browse through the catalogs of various online art platforms! Use "filters" to browse artworks based on your criteria : budget, size, medium, style, theme... During this phase, you're bound to discover the work of art which truly captivates you.

As you do this, you'll refine your artistic vision and desires, while also discerning what doesn't align with your tastes and preferences.

#4 Take your time !

Unless you come across an artwork that instantly captures your heart and aligns perfectly with your criteria, or unless you simply want to indulge yourself, there's no need to hurry. Remember, it's an acquisition that will be a part of your life for many years to come. Even when you're standing in front of the artwork you desire, there are still a few important questions to ponder. This will be the focus of the upcoming "Psssst": Buying Art... Yes, but Buy It Wisely!

Until next time…
