A lifelong calling

For Kathleen Rhee, being an artist isn't just a career—it's a calling that echoes back to her childhood, drawing and painting all the time. From early on, she was influenced by her father who was a commercial illustrator, and who had a pronounced penchant for fine arts. Kathleen goes on to say : “Creativity runs in the family; my father was my mentor”.

Turning a passion for Art into a Professional journey

After high school, she decided to study design. Her educational journey, including studies at the Brisbane Institute of Art, ANU Art School Canberra, and the prestigious Parsons School of Design in New York City, reflects her unwavering dedication to her passion. She worked in the field of advertising (drawing and illustrating), mostly in magazines, in both Australia and New York. After 15 years of doing commercial illustrating and design, she felt ‘burnt out” of this career and decided to go back to her initial calling, painting. This coincided with the arrival of her children, when she said to herself, this is a good time to take the leap. Then followed a slow process of painting and trying out different styles…although she has always known that she wanted to create large abstract paintings. “It’s been a long journey…to come back full circle and do what I wanted to do in the first place”.

What sparked the artist to make the leap…

In 2004, following the arrival of her children, she left her job as commercial illustrator and returned to academia, this time focusing on art therapy to help her unlock her own creative expression. Shortly thereafter, she took on a part-time job as a community art teacher and as manager of a studio for those with disabilities to supplement her income. Yet, every precious moment of her free time was dedicated to the canvas. Through relentless painting and practice, she not only honed her style but also gained in confidence.

A Recognized Talent

Kathleen's artistic talent has not gone unnoticed. As a prize finalist and a featured artist on national television in 2019 and 2020, she has left an indelible mark on the art world. Her acceptance into the coveted Artist-in-Residence program at Château d’Orquevaux, France in 2020 is a testament to the international acclaim she commands.

Exhibition and Artistic Evolution

It was in 2017, that she finally she took the plunge into full-time painting, declaring, "While it was fulfilling to work within the community, the time had come for me to channel that energy into my own artistic journey." She began selling her artworks in two small galleries (only one now), but now she sells primarily on online platforms. It was during the Covid pandemic that her sales “exploded”. She adds : “people were stuck at home and renovating, doing things they never had the time to do before…and people started buying more and more of my artworks; it was a good promotion time then”. But she would like to “get to the level” of exhibiting her work in both a physical gallery and on the internet. To that intent, Art Traffik is the perfect combo ! And we welcome Kathleen to our selection with great delight !
